From the quaint and peculiar village Clogher in County Tyrone of Ireland emerges a story emblematic of the harsh nature that much of the modern world has left behind.

Before anaesthetics and antiseptics, child birth wasn’t the safe and celebratory occasion that we think of today. And though mothers all around the world still endure the tragedy of miscarriages, Sarah McKinna’s story is an important fragment of motherhood, of the grief, horror, and haunting of the losses we accept head-on, but especially for those truths we bury.
